Gruyere planted in 1996, is located in the warm lower Yarra Valley, less than 1km south of Coldstream and at a similar altitude of 110m. The soils are mudstone and clay but with slightly higher silt content than neighbouring Coldstream. The increased silt in the soils relaxes the tannin weave and provides earthy tones to the wines. Gruyere has a gentle northerly aspect and is dry grown. Being dry grown, special attention is paid to managing the soils for vine health and water retention along with the individual crop-loads for each variety. Gruyere has been leased by Mac Forbes Wines since 2012 and has developed a legion of loyal followers.
No chardonnay was produced from the Gruyere vineyard in 2012 or 2013
