The vineyards that we farm are the most important members of the Mac Forbes Wines family. These sites are the culmination of our experience, our experiments and our exploration of Yarra Valley subregions.

The Ferguson vineyard in Woori Yallock was planted in 1995 and has been leased by Mac Forbes Wines since 2012. Located in the cooler Upper Yarra Valley at an altitude of 100-145m and with a south-west facing aspect, the vines are protected from hot northerly winds. With soils of grey loamy clay overlying siltstone, this site is all about structure and has a striking personality that is becoming even more apparent as the vines age.

Spear Gully vineyard, planted in 1981 and farmed by Mac Forbes Wines since 2011, is our highest site in the Upper Yarra sitting at an elevation of 270m. It is our only site on volcanic red soils which are very deep with high nutrient load. This small site has a gentle northerly aspect with two planting densities, giving extra complexity in management and at harvest. It sits in a slight arc and is protected by indigenous trees on three sides. These factors all contribute towards fruit which is more open in structure with exquisite line and purity.

In 2017, we took over the farming of the Little Yarra vineyard in the gorgeous Gladysdale township. Located south of Yarra Junction at an elevation of 202m, this is one of the coolest areas, but the north-facing aspect of the site allows it to capture what is best described as pure sunlight. Grey loam, clay and mudstone soils, this site will continue to offer more perfume and structure as the vines mature.
